Few players actually ask this question, but it is often one that is on their mind. Many of our veteran players have come forth and revealed that they, too, were terrified that they'd be getting involved in a MUSE that came straight out of the Original Series of Star Trek -- embarrassing red uniforms and all. They stayed, of course, most of them for several years. Why did they stay at a place whose name reflects the less exciting era of the first Star Trek television shows? After all, everyone knows that Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and even Star Trek: Voyager are more modern and, as such, more exciting.
Right?
Well, if that's the case, then how did TOS TrekMUSE become so successful, making the Mud Connector's Mud of the Month list, attracting players from around the world and keeping them for years? How did it survive when most "post-TNG" Star Trek MUDs vanished from the face of the Internet?
In answering that, let's first dispel some misconceptions. TOS TrekMUSE is based on the original series of Star Trek, yes, but only in the way that all of the other Star Trek MUDs out there are: the original series involved Kirk, Spock, McCoy, and all the other greats, who make up the history of all of Star Trek. TOS TrekMUSE takes place shortly after the hit film Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. By this time, the "TOS Era" of Star Trek was finally starting to look as it was intended.
The next misconception is that TOS TrekMUSE is somehow behind the times. In fact, TOS TrekMUSE is one of the oldest Star Trek-based games on the Internet. Its developers have been working for years -- attracting volunteers where they could -- building TOS TrekMUSE from the ground up. It is, in fact, the most advanced simulation environment of its kind in the world.
Another misconception is that players who have not seen many (if any) episodes from before the TNG era would not know how to play here. In fact, TOS TrekMUSE is completely encapsulated. A knowledge of Star Trek isn't even required, because each government has classes that teach everything you need to know to fit in at your new home.
Breakthrough technology and a couple good Star Trek films can't make a Star Trek-based game great, however. The true secret of TOS TrekMUSE's success is the quality of the players who inhabit it. In interviews with players of other games, the most common complaint that the TOS TrekMUSE staff found was that the quality of role-playing was somehow not up to par. Similar interviews with TOS TrekMUSE players and multi-game players who have had experience with TOS TrekMUSE reveal an incredible approval rating of the quality of game-play here.
