Let's start off by explaining this place: TOS TrekMUSE. This is a MUSE (Multi-User Simulated Environment). Its purpose is to simulate, as closely as possible, the Star Trek universe. Although this MUSE is physically located in Illinois, USA, we have players of long standing from places like Sweden, Kuwait, Ireland, Hungary, England, Australia, and many other places.
TOS stands for "The Original Series." This venue was chosen because of the way it made some of us feel. We liked the cowboy diplomacy of Captain James T. Kirk, the rugged attitude of Dr. Leonard McCoy, the mystery behind the Vulcan Spock, and the chemistry between all three of these people. But don't start thinking that we limit ourselves to a world where men in red shirts are blown to pieces around every corner.
TOS is only a part of our history here. This MUSE is actually set a few years after Star Trek VI. When you imagine this place, think of the Federation wearing its red uniforms with the white lapel. Think of Captain Kirk, retired, enjoying himself on a ranch somewhere. We draw on the Original Series and the large number of Star Trek books as canon (history) sources. That's what we start with. From there, the players of TOS TrekMUSE determine the history and the main characters of Star Trek.
This place is big, bordering on huge. Since it tries to simulate what it would
be like to live in the Star Trek universe, there are many, many commands that
you can use, like SHOOT AT KLINGON1 and TRANSPORTER ENERGIZE
DELAY. Many of these commands are covered in the classes that you will
take throughout your career as a player. Should you ever need to reference the
exact syntax of a command, however, you can access the help file system.
By just typing HELP, you can see a list of categories that will
tell you how to do everything. If you know what you're looking for, you can
type HELP <subject>. For example, typing HELP BEAM
WEAPONS will show you the file that talks about phasers and disruptors.
It will even show you other help files to read if you want more information.
The help files aren't the only source of information, however. Perhaps the
most useful and common thing for a newbie to do is to ask another player on
TOS TrekMUSE for help. Since the other players were once newbies themselves,
they are very eager to help you. But before you can ask someone for help, you
need to know who's listening. You can type WHO to get a list of
every player that is connected right now. This list will tell you their name
and a little about them. You can type EWHO to see a list of players
from your empire or governmentthat are connected.
You can send a private message to another player, no matter where they are, by typing
page <user>=<message>
To send a message to Velvok, you would type
page Velvok=Help me! I'm lost!
Velvok would then see "<YourName> pages:
Help me! I'm lost!" and will immediately try to help you,
or tell you the name of another person who can.
You can also send a message to everyone who is connected by broadcasting over
a channel. The one you'll be using most is called "public," and is
accessible to everyone. If you type "pub Help me!" then
every player who is listening to the channel will know that you need help, and
will answer you. This is what they'll see:
public <yourname>: Help me!
You should see this, too, if you did everything correctly. The channel text will be in green to help you separate it from everything else.
Note: Type each command exactly as shown.
help new
This is the newbie help file.
help +mail
You'll receive lots of +mail throughout your stay here. This help file tells you how to view it.
help
Just in case you forget a help topic, this will show you the main help categories.
FedNews, RomNews, and KliNews
These are special empire-specific help-files! They hold government-specific commands that the players of an empire have created to improve the gaming experience.
+pmail (help +pmail)
Just type this command when you have mail waiting, or when you want to send mail to someone. It's easier to use than +mail!
TOSNet (help TOSNet)
This command takes you into TOS TrekMUSE's network of discussion boards. It's for information on what's new, cool, and upcoming on TOS TrekMUSE, or to talk to the developers, this is the place!
@ShowCom (help @showcom)
This command shows you all of the channels that you're connected to, and what to type in order to talk on them.
NOTE: Channel names ARE case-sensitive!
public - This is where all players on TOS TrekMUSE gather.
RECRUIT - The one and only channel used to recruit a newbie to
your empire.
Code - Have a question about how to program (code) an object? Ask
here!
There is also a channel dedicated to each empire and government for chatting among players of those groups alone. When you register a character and join an empire, you will be added to your empire's channel automatically.
Here's a hint: You'll see that channels have aliases (like "pub" for the public channel) that make them work. To quickly turn a channel off, type
<alias> off
You can turn it on again with
<alias> on
and you can see who is listening to the channel by typing
<alias> who
This should be enough to get you going. For more specific questions or problems, return to the TOS TrekMUSE Help Pages. Also consider connecting to TOS TrekMUSE as a guest and asking around for help. TOS TrekMUSE has players connected to its servers at all hours who are eager to help new users.
