Creating a New Character

Creating a character (registering) for TOS TrekMUSE is relatively easy. You might want to print the steps below to help you in the registration process. For your convenience, a text-only version of this page is available.

Step one: Connect to TOS TrekMUSE

If you're reading this message, then you're half-way there already! Using a Telnet program or a MUD Client program, connect to one of the following addresses:

When you're connected, you'll see a large, Star-Trek related picture made out of text characters. Figure 1 shows the promt that you will see at the bottom of your screen after a successful connection to the TOS TrekMUSE servers.

Step two: Create your character

This is where you can request a new player. To create a character (called registering), just type the following:

create <CHARACTER NAME> <CHARACTER PASSWORD> <E-MAIL ADDRESS>

<Character Name> should be replaced with the name your character will be called. <Character Password> is the password that you'll use to connect with this player, and <E-mail address> is your E-mail address.

Hint: Write down your character's name as well as your password! You will need them to connect later!

Step three: Read the information in the Main Entrance Room

Once you've typed in the "create" command, you'll be connected and dropped into the TOS Main Entrance Room. Figure 2 illustrates what you'll see next.

    This area is setup to prepare all new players for Registration, Roleplay,
      Space, Econ and other basic information that all players should know.


                TOS TrekMUSE does not allow multiple characters.
              If you violate this rule, your site could be locked.


        To Register for the MUSE and read the basic information, enter the
       Registration Area. Once you have completed the courses you may enter the
                        Embassy Areas to choose an empire.


        Note: You are responsible for reading the information and TOS laws 
                           in the Education Building.



Obvious exits:
Registration Room <N>

At this point, your character is connected to TOS TrekMUSE. However, you will not be able to join the fun until you have entered some information about you and your character. Notice that TOS TrekMUSE doesn't allow multiple characters. That means that you can only have one character at a time. You're allowed to create a new character if your current one dies, but not until that point, so make your decisions wisely! What follows should only take a few minutes, so let's get started!

NOTE: Should you need help at any time, you can type WHO (make sure it's in all capital letters!) to see all the players that are connected. You can then type PAGE <player name>=Help!, and someone will come to your rescue! (Make sure to replace <player name> with the name of someone who's on the WHO list.)

Step four: Enter the Registration Room

You can type "N" and press to go into the Registration Room. When you do this, here's what you should see:

Step five: Begin the Registration Process and Answer the Questions

As the instructions suggest, you'll need to type START and press <ENTER> to begin creating your character. If you don't do this, or if you're disconnected during the registration process, you'll have to use the CREATE command and start over. Don't worry, however, you can still use the name you initially chose.

Typing START results in the screen depicted by Figure 4.

It is recommended that you type "Y" and press <ENTER> at this point. If your computer can support ANSI color (and most computers can), then selecting "Y" for this feature can really help you out.

Notice that you can abort the process by typing "Q" and pressing <ENTER>. If you answer incorrectly, (entering a "N" when you wanted to enter "Y," for example), typing Q will abort your registration, but you won't have to start from the first step. You can start again from step 5.

Once you answer this question, you'll be asked another one:

Will your character be male or female? (M or F)

If your player is going to be a male, type "M" and press <ENTER>. For a female character, type "F" and press <ENTER>.

Step six: Enter Your E-Mail Address

This is a very important step! Once you've selected your gender, TOS TrekMUSE will ask you for your E-Mail address. This is to confirm that you don't have any other characters and to ensure that you're connecting from a site on the Internet that hasn't been banned. It also gives TOS TrekMUSE Directors and Administrators a way to contact you if there is a problem with your character registration.

Enter your E-mail address now, and press <ENTER>. An example of an E-mail address is "kirk@tos.net" (without the quotes, of course). Do not use this address! It won't work! You need to use your E-mail address.

Once you type in your E-mail address, you will be asked if what you entered was correct:

CONFIRM your email address. Do you want your registration password mailed to <your address here>? (Y or N)

If the text at <your address here> is correct, type "Y" and press <ENTER>. If it isn't, type "N" and press <ENTER>. You'll then be asked to enter your E-mail address. Once you've pressed "Y" and then <ENTER>, you will be disconnected from TOS TrekMUSE.

Remember how I stressed that you need to make sure that your E-mail address is correct? This is because TOS TrekMUSE will change the password for your character to a random string, and then E-mail that password to the address that you provided. Once you've disconnected, you will receive an E-mail confirming that you have been registered for TOS TrekMUSE. It'll have your character's name and its new password enclosed.

Now you can reconnect to TOS TrekMUSE and type this to start playing. Refer to figure 1 to see the connection prompt. This time, you will enter the command CONNECT <CHARACTERNAME> <PASSWORD>, where <CHARACTERNAME> is the name of your character and <PASSWORD> is the random collection of numbers and letters enclosed in the E-mail from TOS TrekMUSE.

Congratulations! You should be successfully registered and ready to enjoy a long career as your new player! You still have to select which Empire (Federation, Romulan, Klingon, etc.), as well as other things. There should be many players already connected who are interested in helping you, however. You can change your name or password at a future date. Right now, you are a registered player free to join any empire or government and persue your future at TOS TrekMUSE any way you please!
