Information About the Addresses

tos.tos.net 1701

This address is used for telnet or MUD clients. It is the main address used for connecting to TOS TrekMUSE. Notice the "1701" at the end: that's the Port Number. Some MUD Clients will have a separate box for the port number: that's what you place in it. If your client doesn't have a separate box for the port number, try typing the address in just as you see above, with the port number at the end of the address. Most programs should be smart enough to figure out the address.

bigbang.tos.net

This address is used for people that have access to what is known as "raw telnet." Basically, this address gives you access to a copy of "tinyfugue," an old online MUD client. Use this address if you're stuck with Windows Telnet, AOL Telnet, or NCSA Telnet for the Macintosh.

http://bigbang.tos.net

This Web address will allow your Java-capable Web browser to connect to TOS TrekMUSE. It's exactly the same as "bigbang.tos.net". Just be sure to click on the window that you want to type in.

What to Do on Your Side

If you have a Java-capable Web browser, you can use it to connect to TOS TrekMUSE! Just point your browser to http://bigbang.tos.net. It might take some time for the page to load, so be patient. When you see the Welcome Screen for TOS TrekMUSE pop up, be sure to click on the window. That will tell your browser that the next text you type is inteded for TOS TrekMUSE, not for the welcome screen.

NOTE: bigbang might not connect on your first try. If you see the connection screen pop up again, just try to connect a second time, and you should be fine.

If you don't have access to a java-capable Web browser, or if you have problems with your browser, try telnetting to "bigbang.tos.net". This is the same thing that you see on the web page. Here are our favorite ways to use Telnet on Macintosh and PC. (If you're part of a service like Prodigy or AOL, you'll have to use their clients. The suggestions below probably won't work for you.)

PC: If you have Windows 95 or later, go to your Start Menu and select "RUN." When the dialog pops up, type "telnet bigbang.tos.net" and press enter. (You won't need the quotes, of course.) You can also use a telnet client. Many such clients can be downloaded for free from http://www.tucows.com. If you like, you could download ZMud, a fantastic MUD client. For more information on ZMud, including download links, see our telnet clients page.

Mac: There really isn't a built-in way to telnet on the Macintosh. You can download "NCSA Telnet" from http://www.tucows.com, or (even better), you can download Savitar, a MUD client for Macintosh. For more information on Savitar, including download links, see our telnet clients page.

Unix: Many of our players connect to TOS TrekMUSE through computer labs at their schools. Some of these labs use Unix or Linux, which can be hard to understand. We don't have a rock-solid suggestion that will help you connect with Unix or Linux boxes very easily. But if you can find a copy of Netscape (which most computer labs seem to have), you can just connect to http://bigbang.tos.net!

If all else fails, point your browser to the Mud Connector's Ultra Newbie Guide (http://www.mudconnector.com/mud_connect.html). Compiled by the world's experts in this sort of thing and maintained on the best MUD site in the world, this guide is bound to help you.

What to Do When You See the Welcoming Screen

There are three things that you can do at this point: Connect as your player, create a new player, and connect as a guest. Here are detailed instructions for each.

To create a player, type CREATE <NAME> <PASSWORD> <E-MAIL>, where <NAME> is the name you want to use for your player, <PASSWORD> is the password that you want to use, and <E-MAIL> is your E-mail address. Once you do this, you just need to follow the prompts; you'll have a new character soon!

NOTE: TOS TrekMUSE only allows for a person to have one player at a time.

To connect as a player that you've already created, type "CONNECT <YOURNAME> <YOURPASSWORD>." You can abbreviate CONNECT and just type CON, if you like.

To connect as a guest, just type "CONNECT GUEST."

An entire Web page has been devoted to helping players create a character. It should help with specific issues involving the registration system.
