Five-Star Telnet Clients

You can connect to TOS TrekMUSE using "raw" telnet, but you won't be able to see color, hear sound, and have access to some of the other features that make TOS TrekMUSE unique in the world. Our BigBang Java Access Page (http://bigbang.tos.net) offers a web-based interface for color and special features, but the best way to connect to TOS TrekMUSE is with a telnet client.

These programs, often created by avid gamers, offer countless features to help you expand your experience at TOS TrekMUSE. We have selected two clients, Savitar (for Macintosh) and Zmud (for Windows), because they are the best of the best.

Savitar (http://www.heynow.com/Savitar)

In many ways, Savitar is superior to most PC client programs. It is cheap (with a shareware fee of US$15), solid, and uses as many features of the Macintosh as you can imagine. It supports macros, triggers, color, sound -- everything!

It's impossible to describe how wonderful this program is. One user once described being immersed in TOS TrekMUSE with Savitar. He had set it up to play Star Trek-type sounds at all sorts of triggers. While he was piloting a starship, he had configured Savitar's Macintalk integration to read computer responses to him in the voice of the computer. He said that he often forgot that he was sitting in front of his Mac because the experience was so real.

ZMud (http://www.zuggsoft.com/)

ZMud has the misfortune of appearing at the bottom of alphabetical lists of clients. Nevertheless, its name is everywhere. There is no finer telnet client in the world. It supports every feature imaginable, from triggers to macros, scripting to Mud Sound Protocol (MSP). At a reasonable cost of US$25 (Shareware), it's easy to see why even our Macintosh owners have downloaded a copy for use at work on PCs.

ZMud will do everything for you. And once you're registered, you're registered for life, with automatic update notices coming through the program every time a new version is created. ZMud also comes with a developer's kit, a chat client, and access to their beta versions of the software. For those who don't wish to pay the shareware fee, an older version of ZMud is available for download at their site. Clearly, this is a win-win situation.

Other Clients

TOS TrekMUSE has decided only to advertise Savitar and ZMud because they are the best programs of their kind. There are many other clients out there, however, with platform support covering all operating system types, including UNIX and variants. The Mud Connector (http://mudconnect.com) maintains a list of client programs. Follow the link below.

http://www.mudconnector.com/resources/Mud_Resources:Mud_Clients.html

You can also access telnet clients that reside on the TOS TrekMUSE servers. Again, the TOS TrekMUSE BigBang Java Access Page (http://bigbang.tos.net) is available to any Java-capable Web browser. The telnet site bigbang.tos.net will also provide access to a text-only copy of BigBang for "raw" telnet users.

Support and Help

Because TOS TrekMUSE is a not-for-profit endeavor that is maintained solely by volunteers, it is impossible to guarantee any support for third-party client programs. Nearly every player connected to TOS TrekMUSE uses BigBang, Savitar, or ZMud, however, and that is a better group of experts than we could ever hope to hire. If you have troubles with your client, connect to TOS TrekMUSE at tos.tos.net 1701 and ask for help.

For added help, you may consider visiting our help pages that cover connecting to TOS TrekMUSE and creating a character. If they do not offer the kind of help that you are looking for, point your browser to the Mud Connector's Ultra Newbie Guide (http://www.mudconnector.com/mud_connect.html). Sometimes all it takes to get up and running is a different set of instructions.
